Ein Coupe bricht Rekorde

Aluminum diet

The BMW 328 Kamm Coupé, a masterpiece of aerodynamics, was developed in 1939 on the basis of the BMW 328 sports car. The chassis was extended by 20 cm for the coupé. The tubular lattice frame was originally made of “Elektron” and was later covered with aluminum sheets. A scale model of the vehicle achieved an outstanding CW value of just 0.25 in development tests at the time. In order to keep the history of the BMW Kamm Coupé alive, the tubular lattice frame of the racing car was recreated for the reopening of the BMW Museum.

The reconstruction

First, the BMW Kamm Coupé was digitally reconstructed by a team of designers at BMW. Images and photographs of the vehicle were used to digitally recreate the proportions and surfaces. Based on the resulting files, a full model was milled from structural foam. The contours were taken from this model and a steel frame was produced, which served as a production jig for the final aluminum frame.

The production

The steel frame was designed so that the model could be removed later. The aluminum frame could then be produced using the steel production jig. The aluminum tubes were bent individually and then welded together.
