Exploding elegance

Metamorphoses of a BMW 507

A work of art in every situation

The BMW 507 is not only an outstanding work of art as an automobile, but also impresses with its elegance as a sculpture. This project was a particular pleasure for us, as it combines several of our business areas in a unique way. The sculpture was produced at the customer’s special request for an automobile collection and was assembled in the USA.

Model and design

The project began with a model car. To create an initial design draft, this was dismantled into individual parts and hung on a frame. After approval from the customer, we were able to turn the model into reality. We started with the outer skin of the vehicle. We used an original part for the front, into which we inserted a replacement part. To keep the weight of the sculpture as low as possible, the frame of the BMW 507 was made entirely from aluminum.

Old and new

The hood, trunk lid and rear of the vehicle were also made from original parts. The engine is also an original BMW 507 engine. The gearbox and dashboard were scanned and reproduced as 3D printed parts. The front kidneys of the vehicle were also 3D-printed, then copper-plated and chrome-plated. Another special feature are the seats and interior door panels, which were milled from plastic for weight reduction and later covered by an upholsterer.

Light accents for the sculpture

After painting and completion of all the add-on parts, the sculpture was suspended using wire ropes. The project was completed with a light installation, which we implemented in collaboration with lighting designer Matthias Liedtke.
