“Flying to Peace” – this is how Ingo Maurer describes his light art object in Hall 12 of the Frankfurt Trade Fair. He won the “Kunst am Bau” competition with this pendulum, which secured him approval for the art installation on the exhibition grounds. The pendulum, made of aluminum, swings not only horizontally but also vertically at a height of 18 meters.

The production

The X meter high and Y meter wide pendulum is made entirely of aluminum. The outer shell was assembled from a total of 18 individual elements, each of which was individually manufactured using a Kraftformer. As the pendulum is exposed to dynamic loads, a substructure made of aluminum tubes was developed. This absorbs the forces and also serves as a support for the wire rope on which the art object hangs.

The surface

In addition to the shape, the surface of the installation is particularly eye-catching. The aluminum was highly polished in-house. To do this, the pendulum is first ground very finely. Using a cotton disc and the right polishing pastes, an almost mirror-like surface can then be created.

The reflection of life

For Ingo Maurer, the movement of the pendulum symbolizes the movement in life. At the same time, the installation creates a calm and contemplative atmosphere that separates the viewer from the hectic atmosphere of a trade fair.
