In balance with gravity
The design of the 9 meter high and 380 kilogram sculpture was first created on a computer. An STL 3D print was used to produce a true-to-scale model in order to verify the design in reality. Once the design of the drop had been finalized, a production jig was produced from laser cuttings based on the CAD file. Several suspension tests allowed the calculated centre of gravity to be checked and optimized.
Challenges and production
The aluminum outer skin of the sculpture consists of 63 individual components. Each element was individually formed using a force former, adapted to the jig and then welded to the other components. The shape of the drop was particularly challenging. As it is a closed body, not all weld seams could be processed on both sides. In a final step, the 25 m² surface of the sculpture was mirror polished.
Installation on site
Once the sculpture was completed, a complex transport construction was made. It had to ensure that the 220 kilograms of the substructure and the 160 kilograms of the outer skin were relieved in order to avoid deformations in the sculpture. The drop was installed via an opening in the roof.
